The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
